Brake Master Cylinder FAQ
The master cylinder is the first component of the braking system that is activated when the brake pedal is depressed. Whenever you step on the brake pedal, the piston is pushed into the cylinder, forcing the brake fluid through all brake lines. In return, the piston in the caliper pushes the brake pads toward the rotor (or pushes the brake shoes toward the drum), which slows the rotation of the wheels toward the workshop.
Brake fluid leakage: If you see or smell the brake fluid under the hood of the vehicle, it may be that the brake master cylinder is spraying a leak. The brake pedal slips to the floor: If you do not see any external fluid leads, but the brake pedal slips to the floor, there may be an internal leak in the master cylinder. This feeling is often referred to as the “sponge” brake pedal. Brake warning light: If the brake fluid leaks or is completely drained, the brake warning light will illuminate (on newer vehicles). If your vehicle is older and does not have a brake warning light, but you experience other symptoms in this list, it may be a brake master cylinder leak. Drag the brakes: In some cases, a malfunction of the master cylinder will notice that the brake pads are completely loosened, which will make your vehicle feel like dragging or resisting when trying to drive forward.
1. When repairing the brake master cylinder, the first thing to do is to correctly identify the components of the brake system by referring to the user manual. Find the location of the brake fluid tank. 2. Remove all brake fluid from the master cylinder oil tank. After removing the brake fluid, make sure to dispose of it correctly. 3. Remove the brake oil pipeline. It is easiest to do this with an adjustable wrench. When disconnecting them, you may experience some excess liquid leaking from the pipeline. 4. Separate the brake master cylinder by removing the mounting bolts, and then lift it out of the support area for disassembly. 5. Now is the time to install the new brake master cylinder… The first step is to vent the new brake master cylinder until all the air in the internal passage is exhausted. Then, fix the new master cylinder with bolts, and then reconnect the pipeline and the electric fluid sensor. 6. After installing the new master cylinder, all brake lines need to be vented to each caliper/wheel. If your vehicle has an anti-lock braking system, you need to use a special scanner tool to activate the ABS pump to ensure that all air is removed from the ABS system. 7. After completing all the above steps, you will need to conduct a complete safety inspection to ensure that the removed brake line does not leak.
When the brake master cylinder fails or there is any abnormality in the brake system, it is absolutely unsafe to operate the vehicle. If you see, hear or feel any signs that the brakes may need to be repaired, it is recommended that you diagnose and repair the vehicle as soon as possible. Fortunately, with NuBrakes, our technicians can provide you with services 7 days a week to diagnose and repair your vehicle in your office or home.
