Brake Shoes FAQ

The brake shoe is similar to the brake pad. It is a curved metal sheet with ceramic or semi-metallic material, which presses up on the brake drum to generate friction and slow down the vehicle.
Whenever you step on the brake pedal, the hydraulic cylinder in the drum brake presses the brake shoe against the brake drum, creating friction. The friction generated between the shoe lining and the drum brake stops the vehicle. Drum brakes are usually found on the rear axle of the vehicle.
Loud or abnormal sound: As long as you hear a harsh or scratching sound when braking, it usually indicates that the brake pads or brake shoes need to be replaced. You may hear noise every time you press the brake pedal. Loose parking brake: Usually, you will find that a loose parking brake is caused by worn brake shoes and/or drums. Whenever the drum is worn, the brake shoe cannot firmly clamp the worn drum. Reduced braking power: When stepping on the brake pedal, a common symptom of brake shoe failure is reduced braking power. As the wear of the brake shoe becomes more and more serious, its ability to decelerate the vehicle decreases.
Brake shoes that drive poorly are unsafe. The braking system is a core component of vehicle safety. If you experience a brake failure or feel like it is time to repair the brake shoes, we strongly recommend having a professional technician evaluate your vehicle as soon as possible.
When maintaining a vehicle, brake pads and brake shoes are the most important and vital parts. The brake shoes create friction, which helps the vehicle stop when you step on the brake pedal. You should replace your brake shoes every 35,000-50,000 miles according to your driving habits or whenever abnormal symptoms start to appear when braking.
1. Remove the rear wheel and brake drum 2. Remove the brake shoe assembly: the brake shoe is assembled as a whole. There are two brake shoes and a drum inside each wheel. These brake shoes are fixed together by several hardware (pins, brackets and screws). 3. Assemble the new brake shoe: We recommend to assemble the new brake shoe before attempting to install the new brake shoe. Otherwise, it is easy to be confused with the various small hardware mentioned above. 4. Install the new assembly: First, you need to put the brake shoe on the bracket so that the brake shoe is correctly installed in place. After setting, you can replace the spring pin that fixes the component on the brake plate. 5. Put the wheel back on the vehicle: make sure that each lug nut is properly tightened to OEM specifications.
Yes, you can replace the brake shoes yourself. That being said, considering the added hardware, it is more difficult to replace brake shoes than disc brakes. In addition, you can call NuBrakes and other services, and we will send professional brake repair technicians to your location for repairs.
